Kinship and Social Security in Europe

1st - 3rd November 2007

The conference 'Kinship and Social Security in Europe' was about mutual assistance within kinship networks in Europe considered from historical, ethnographic, and quantitative perspectives. It also discussed alternative methodological approaches to comparison and theoretical evaluation in this field.

The occasion for this was the presentation of the results of the EU-funded research project 'KASS' which investigated these themes - and their implications for fertility and social security - in eight European countries and 19 specific fieldsites. The conference has given equal weight to the findings of the project itself and to other perspectives on the same themes.

The conference was an occasion on which the KASS findings can be integrated into the European policy process - by discussions between the original research team, other researchers, and experts on social and demographic policy.
