Walked with Dereje, Peter and Uchan, Dereje’s Anywaa field assistant (half Rwandan refugee, brother of Julia, Christiane’s temporary field assistant; more about Uchan, Julia and Christiane in the notes from October) to Uchum, a Nuer enclave in Anywaa territory close to the Baro River west of Gambella town.

We did a minimal genealogy (including siblings of senior living generation) and a homestead census of the compound where a hut is under construction for Dereje. He will do a neighbourhood census plus genealogical record along the same pattern for a number of selected localities.

Photographed: Dereje’s hut being plastered; Dereje’s compound floor being plastered; cattle in Uchum; the waterpipe of an Anywaa farmer across the river.

Here a selection:

We had a swim in the river. A bit too shallow to be real fun.

Here are the genealogical/microcensus data we did together as training in kinship notation.

Three other persons live in the compound:

Pal, m., 15,

Both are sons of Gachai (deceased; would be ca. 50, B to Riek). Their mother is also dead.

Guaneer, m., 12;
Turang’, m., 12 Son of Beech (B to Riek): he lives here because it is closer to school.

Further genealogical background information can be found in the following diagrams.
